Laura and I had a fun date today! We went on the Royal Opera's Backstage tour. We got to go up on stage, down below, the prime
seats on the balcony and the royal apartments (no pictures allowed in there though - and no sitting - the fabric cost 50,000 SEK
(about 7,000 USD) a YARD!) Among the interesting things we learned was that the stage is actually built on a 4 degree slope
causing problems for stage hands, because props roll around if not prop-erly (get it?) bolted, and for dancers, who have special
practice studios with a sloping floor so they can get used to dancing on the slope while on pointe. Oh, and there's a person who's
job it is to scream the first word of every line to make sure the singers remember the words to their songs, but since she (and it's
always a she because the higher pitch travels further) is scream towards the back of the stage, the audience can't hear it. The
bottom pic is underneath the stage - the prompter's door is to the right, and the black squares are little elevators to the trap doors
for cool entrances.
